Within hours, the idea spread to both houses of Congress, with lawmakers proposing an AIG bonus tax.

The move represents somewhat of an about-face for the Senator.

While the Senate was constructing the $787 billion stimulus last month, Dodd added an executive-compensation restriction to the bill. That amendment provides an “exception for contractually obligated bonuses agreed on before Feb. 11, 2009” -- which exempts the very AIG bonuses Dodd and others are now seeking to tax.

The amendment made it into the final version of the bill, and is law.

Separately, Sen. Dodd was AIG’s largest single recipient of campaign donations during the 2008 election cycle with $103,100, according to opensecrets.org.

Dodd’s office did not immediately return a request for comment.

What a stain.

A Quote...

"Be greedy when others are cautious and be cautious when others are greedy."

Warren Buffett (no, not Jimmy Buffett)

p.s. - But the Obama spending bill would stimulate the government, not the economy.

Mitt Romney says Obama's spending bill would stimulate the government rather than the economy.

We're on an economic tightrope. The package that passed the House is a huge increase in the amount of government borrowing. And we've borrowed so much already that if we add too much more debt, or spend foolishly, we could invite an even bigger crisis.

We could precipitate a worldwide crisis of confidence in America, leading to a run on the dollar or hyperinflation that wipes out family savings and devastates the middle class.

It's still early in the administration of President Obama. Like everyone who loves this country, I want him to adopt the correct course and then to succeed. He still has a chance to step in and insist on spending discipline among the members of his own party.

It's his job to set priorities. I hope for America's sake that he knows that a chief executive can't vote "present." He has to say yes to some things and no to a lot of others.

As someone who spent a career in the private sector, I'd like to see a stimulus package that respects the productivity and genius of the American people. And experience shows us what it should look like.

First, there are two ways you can put money into the economy, by spending more or by taxing less. But if it's stimulus you want, taxing less works best. That's why permanent tax cuts should be the centerpiece of the economic stimulus.

Second, any new spending must be strictly limited to projects that are essential. How do we define essential? Well, a good rule is that the projects we fund in a stimulus should be legitimate government priorities that would have been carried out in the future anyway, and are simply being moved up to create those jobs now.

As we take out nonessential projects, we should focus on funding the real needs of government that will have immediate impact. And what better place to begin than repairing and replacing military equipment that was damaged or destroyed in Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan?

Third, sending out rebate checks to citizens and businesses is not a tax cut. The media bought this line so far, but they've got it wrong. Checks in the mail are refunds, not tax cuts. We tried rebate checks in 2008 and they did virtually nothing to jump-start the economy. Disposable income went up, but consumption hardly moved.

Businesses aren't stupid. They're not going to invest in equipment and new hires for a one-time, short-term blip. What's needed are permanent rate cuts on individuals and businesses.

Fourth, if we're going to tax less and spend more to get the economy moving, then we have to make another commitment as well. As soon as this economy recovers, we have to regain control over the federal budget, and above all, over entitlement spending for programs such as Social Security and Medicare. This is more important than most people are willing to admit.

There is a real danger that with trillions of additional borrowing -- from the budget deficit and from the stimulus -- world investors will begin to fear that our dollars won't be worth much in the future. It is essential that we demonstrate our commitment to maintaining the value of the dollar. That means showing the world that we will put a stop to runaway spending and borrowing.

Fifth, we must begin to recover from the enormous losses in the capital investment pool. And the surest, most obvious way to get that done is to send a clear signal that there will be no tax increases on investment and capital gains. The 2001 and 2003 tax cuts should be extended permanently, or at least temporarily.

And finally, let's exercise restraint in the size of the stimulus package. Last year, with the economy already faltering, I proposed a stimulus of $233 billion. The Washington Post said: "Romney's plan is way too big." So what critique will the media have for the size of the Obama package?

In the final analysis, we know that only the private sector -- entrepreneurs and businesses large and small -- can create the millions of jobs our country needs. The invisible hand of the market always moves faster and better than the heavy hand of government.

Stop Spending Money (You Dummies)

Here are some highlights of the new 'stimulus' pacakge. It was supposed to be about roads / infrastructure / etc. and it is really about pork and advancing personal agendas.

The best part about it, you ask? />Stop with bailouts / stimulus (pork in disguise).

• $2 billion earmark to re-start FutureGen, a near-zero emissions coal power plant in Illinois that the Department of type='text'>Time to file your taxes....'The Millionaire Next Door'

So, amidst all of the 'economic stimulus' talk, it is just about time to file our taxes. Just waiting on the last W-2 and off we go. I read today on cnn that our new President would like a tax rebate for all 'working' Americans. First, you should understand that many of the people are receiving a 'rebate' are not actually paying taxes. Not to dive headlong into semantics, but it sounds more like a 'bate' rather than a 'rebate'.

That being said, for all of you who have filed your taxes, have you noticed that often times you receive a 1099 and you have to input a figure into your 1040 for 'unearned' income? Wait, 'unearned' income? Did it fall from the sky? If you have investments / rental properties / etc. how is this income 'unearned'? Should you be ashamed of that?

All of the class warriors would lead you to believe that folks with money were born with silver spoons and inherited it. Not true - I would recommend that everyone read 'The Millionaire Next Door'. The main lesson that I learned is that 9 out of 10 millionaires are first generation rich and contrary to popular(ist) belief these people work hard and spend less than they make...in fact, these people keep a pretty low profile (more substance than style). You probably would not even think that they are millionaires.

'Unearned' income is a misnomer - if you have worked hard and pinched pennies to invest, good for you. If you don't pay taxes because of the amount of money you make / number of kids you have, I do not want to hear about how you want your 'bate'...

Least shocking news ever...

So, I am not a big fan of the evangelicals. Annie bought me a new one and it disappeared just about a year ago. I think that she was starting to question the stability of our holy union given my penchant for losing rings.

That being said, I always thought that I left the second ring at my in-laws' house on a Sunday. During the Christmas break I happened to be in their basement and Willie was looking for something in the chair cushion and guess what? There is my ring (as well as my old thumb drive). They both must have fallen out of my pocket and just sat there until they were discovered.

On to miracle two. As a Christmas present, Annie and I got a Dyson Animal vacuum. After setting it up, I went on a vacuuming rampage (under furniture, edges, etc.). As I was vacuuming our bedroom, I moved our red chair and lo and behold, our second Touareg key (that had been missing for 6+ months). A car key, not that big of a deal, right? Wrong, these VW keys are the laser cut type that cannot be replicated at Home Depot. You have to go to the dealership and pay $250.

The best part of finding the key was that I was able to clear my good name. Annie accused me of losing it, but it was found near her chair.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!
<img width='1' height='1' They overcame 2 overturned touchdowns (someone explain to me the tuck rule again), a terrible offsides call, and losing the coin toss at the start of overtime to win 30-24.

The defense broke Tony 'I spent 2 hours before the came eating KFC and that is why I cannot hold onto the ball' Romo's pinkie finger at the end of game, forced a 3 and out and then blocked a punt into the endzone for the win.

Fantastic! I loved it. It is the most excited I have been since their playoff game in 1998 when Jake the Snake Plummer beat these same Cowboys. For all of you NFL fans, the Cardinals have won a playoff game more recently than the Cowgirls (98 vs. 96). How about them apples? Just because you are the team on 'Hard Knocks' does not mean that you are going to the superbowl.

The best part of the victory, you ask? The best part was watching the faces of all of the Cowboys fans with their blue jerseys and their looks of disbelief. America's team? Not hardly. Try 'El Equipo Mexicano'. After 3 months at Boart (and thanks to a guy named Kevin), I have discovered a crushed ice machine in a tucked away breakroom in the building next to mine.

I work in some offices that are attached to the plant and right next door is our corporate hq. It turns out that they have an ice machine, so now instead of bringing my own ice from home and hoping that it does not melt before my coke break, I just cruise over to the other building for a refill.

Incidently, there is a vending machine in this breakroom and one of the more interesting offerings in the machine is called a "Big Texas" (see pic below). I did not realize that the lonestar state had a great bakery tradition. What types of preservatives are pumped into this thing to prevent it from going moldy (I am sure that they do not turn over that frequently)....

Chips (yes), Candy (sure), but a cinnamon roll?

What is the nastiest thing that you have eaten from a vending machine?

Privatization at the Senate Cafeteria...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/08/AR2008060801765.html?hpid=topnews

How about them apples?

Diane Feinstein suggesting privatization?

The irony is fantastic - the private model (on the House side) turns a profit and the government model (on the Senate side) loses money.

Despite this example, these morons are rolling out government programs left and right to help solve our problems. No thank you - stay out of my life!

Furthermore, examine the following quote from a mental midget (getting paid $169k annually to 'solve our problems'.)

"I know what happens with privatization. Workers lose jobs, and the next generation of workers make less in wages. These are some of the lowest-paid workers in our country, and I want to help them," Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), a staunch labor union ally, said recently.

Workers lose their jobs and make less money? What are you talking about, the rest of us are funding the deficit! His name is Jeremiah Wright and he is like a talk radio host - say outrageous things for ratings and make all these claims about how whitey is keeping him down and America is a steaming racist pile.

Here is the interesting part...the guy was raised middle class and is the personification of the american dream.

See below:

Excerpts from Obama's Rev. Wright Mythology, Newsmax, April 13, 2008

"In retirement, Wright will continue a life of privilege that dates back to Central High. As a retirement gift, Wright's Trinity United Church of Christ is building him a million-dollar home abutting Odyssey Country Club and Golf Course in the nearly all-white Chicago suburb of Tinley Park. The home sits on land the pastor purchased in 2004 for $345,000. In December 2006, Wright sold the land to his church, which took out a $1.6 million mortgage on the property. In April 2007, the church applied for a building permit for the brick and stone structure.

"Wright's new home has 10,340 square feet of space, about four times the size of a typical suburban house. We were able to leave Elliott with my parents and enjoy a nice dinner.

We spent some time over the weekend harkening back to ye olden days.

Like the time we lived at the U and the time that I made Annie live in Provo for the summer, etc.

We also talked about the first time that we met in person (Sunday February 3, 2002). I was getting ready for the Olympics and did not have much free time (hence the Sunday night rendezvous). For a fun first blind date activity, we went down to my venue in Provo and Annie got to see all of the neat behind the scenes hockey stuff.

Annie had the advantage of teaching with a girl that was in my mission as well as seeing me on TV before we met in person. I just remember knocking on the door of her house with a little bit of trepidation. I had been on probably 30 blind dates (all of my friends were married, so their wives all took a run at setting me up) and some were better than others.
She opened the door (dressed casually in jeans and a sweater with a coat) and we said hello, nice to meet you, etc.

I remember thinking two things walking down the drive way to my car.

First - wow, this girl is cute and smart!

Second - is she taller than me? oh no, I think that she may be taller than me....

Turns out that we are the same height (if I stand up straight) and therefore I was an eligible suitor.

We have enjoyed 5+ years of marriage with lots of happy milestones (grad school, job changes, building a house, having a baby, etc.).

I am looking forward to many more....

The Reflex!

A very bad Duran Duran song you ask?

No - it describes Anne's propensity for gagging.

It does not take a whole lot.

Exhibit A - Perhaps 3 weeks ago, we were watching a House re-run waiting for baby to fall asleep. It was only the second time that I have ever watched House. The storyline is that he was trying to help some lady in Antartica. At one point, a dude in antartica had to drink a small sample of this lady's urine to perform a test (that otherwise would have been done in a lab). Annie gagged and ran out. I thought that she was going to hurl.

Exhibit B - One night this week we were eating philly steak sandwiches for dinner and I gave Elliott some of my roll. He has become obsessed with dipping all of his food into liquids like ranch dip. I let him dip his bread in some ketchup. Annie does not like ketchup (nor mayonaise, yet she likes fry sauce) and as baby began to eat his ketchup soaked bread, she headed for the hills.

If you are going to spew, spew into this....

The Audacity of Wanting My Money...

All politicians are hypocrites - that is easy to say.

Some are just more hypocritcal than others.

For a little inside info on how Barack Obama really feels about helping those less fortunate read ths article.

To quote George Orwell's book 'Animal Farm', "All animals are equal some are just more equal than others."

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-0704250022apr25,1,3690658.story?page=1

I love that he is asking all of us to do something that he is not willing to do.

"From 1997 through 2002, the Obamas reported devoting less than 1 percent of their household income to charity. I am not asking for a Final Four appearance, just win a first round game! Please! Stupid Texas A&M, stupid offensive rebounds. Box out! How hard is that?

4. Suns losing to the Bulls in the 1993 Playoffs (Triple OT, etc.) - stupid MJ.

3. The Sun Devils going undefeated in 1996 in football go to the Rose Bowl and score a touchdown late against the Luckeyes and then they give up a crazy hail mary to lose. Goodbye national championship / perfect season.

2. The Suns losing to the Spurs last year because of retard Bob Horry and lame David Stern. There is not spirit vs. letter of the law discussion when it comes to guys coming off the bench, but we can just change all of the rules around when we find out all of our referees are gambling. Stern you are a stain.

1. Argentina losing to the Germans in 2006 in the World Cup. Argentina leads the whole match and then their goal tender gets taken out. The backup comes in and gets beat and then it goes to OT and then to penalty kicks and they lose (when they were a popular pick to win it all).

Why does the World Cup loss hurt the worst? I will tell you - it only comes around every 4 years.

Well, at least I have BYU Football season to look forward to - some say they could make it to the BCS....I might just get my hopes up.

Stop, you are hurting my ears....

Selection of words / phrases heard by me over the past month.....

Pundint (pundit)

Inspiring singer (aspiring)

Interpet (interpret)

Flustrating (frustrating)

Gendre (genre)

Unendated (Inundated)

Various Assundry (various and sundry)

Read some books people, they will help you pronounce / use words correctly.

You may add to my list if you have been equally offended.

Ice!

So, I am settling into a routine with my new job.

I have figured out a new route to the office and generally have a lay of the land.

I do, however, have one major issue. Annie mocks this issue.

At AMEX we had an ice machine on every floor. At 10:00 am most days, I would get a cup full of ice and buy a coke.

At Boart my coke is free (the have a nicely stocked fridge), but there is no ice machine. Warm coke is gross!

So, as a workaround, I fill a cup of ice when I come into work and hope that it lasts until 10:00.

We will be moving our HQ to SJ in the next few months - I sure hope that our new building has an ice machine.

What is Jake short for?

Last week I was watching Jeopardy while putting Elliott to bed - it was a re-run from a few years ago. So cold that my face froze last night as I walked around the WTC site. AMEX's headquarters (and my hotel) are right across, so it is interesting to see.

Also, it is interesting to see how little kids are transported around 'the city'. When Annie was pregnant, she accused me of pointing out babies every where we went. I have to say that before she was pregnant, I can't say that I noticed babies very much.

With Elliott, I am much more observant. I have notice many parents over the past couple of days wheeling around their kids in strollers (because they don't have cars) and the babies have portable sleeping bags to keep them warm. You know, "America's Dairyland".

It took me a while to get here (SLC to Minneapolis and then to CWA (Central Wisconsin Airport) and then 30 miles south to the bustling metropolis of Plover.

Why am I in Plover, you ask? It is the site of one of our fulfillment vendors and a group of us Amex folks are paying them a visit.

I arrived in time to change clothes and clean up before going to dinner. We drove to Steven's Point and went to a little place called Michele's.

It was tasty. I had a ribeye steak Wisconsin style (3 cheeses and bacon on the top).

We talked about Favre and Ice Fishing and Deer Hunting and Snow. In fact, one guy was telling a story and said, "the other day I was looking for my gloves because I was going out to do snow". It was great.

Oh for Farve. Hey now. Sure, you betcha. Stay tuned for pics.

By the way, it is 0 degrees farenheit here.
